Details of the Treatment:

Active acne plus dark marks left from older spots — and every treatment for one was making the other worse. Retinoids reduced the breakouts but darkened the marks; lightening creams calmed the marks but irritated the spots.

On assessment, both cheeks showed scattered active breakouts with darker marks around them where older spots had healed. The pattern reflected ongoing acne layered on top of dark marks left behind by earlier breakouts. A salicylic approach suited this presentation because it works on both the active acne and the surrounding marks at the same time.

A series of salicylic acid peels was performed at conservative strength. The peel reaches into the pores to address active breakouts while also helping lighten the surrounding dark marks at the surface. The patient kept her topical acne care running in parallel. In the after image, the active breakouts are well controlled, the dark marks have lightened, and the skin texture reads smoother. Treating two issues with one approach is the right framework when the issues share an underlying cause.

Individual results vary. The outcome shown reflects this patient's specific anatomy, health history, and treatment plan. Results shown are not guaranteed and are not necessarily typical. Photos used with patient consent.
