Overview
Dermaplaning in Irvine
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation. A sterile blade is drawn across the skin at an angle to lift away dead surface cells and the fine vellus hair most people call peach fuzz.
The immediate change is texture and light. Skin reflects differently once the fuzz and dead layer are gone, which is why makeup sits flatter afterward and why patients often book it before an event or a photograph.
It is performed by Leah, our licensed esthetician, and it is squarely within esthetician scope in California. Nothing penetrates the skin and nothing is injected.

Who treats you
Why Patients Choose Spectrum for Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a simple treatment done badly quite often. The blade angle, the tension held on the skin and the number of passes over one area decide whether you leave smooth or irritated.
Leah is a licensed esthetician working in a physician-led practice rather than a standalone facial bar. Dermaplaning was added to California esthetician scope in 2022 and it is unambiguously hers to perform.
What the physician-led setting adds is the assessment around it. Active acne, rosacea flares and some skin conditions make dermaplaning a poor idea that day, and there is a doctor on site if something turns up that sits outside aesthetician scope.

How Dermaplaning Works
A sterile surgical-grade blade is held against the skin at a shallow angle and drawn across it. That removes the outermost layer of dead cells along with vellus hair.
There is no chemical, no heat and no penetration. It is mechanical exfoliation, which is why there is no recovery period attached to it.
Why it makes products and makeup work better
A layer of dead cells and fine hair sits between your skincare and the skin you are trying to treat. Removing it lets serums make better contact.
The same is true of makeup. Foundation sits flatter on a dermaplaned face because it is no longer bridging over fuzz.
Is this the right treatment
What Dermaplaning Does, and What It Does Not
It is a surface treatment. That is both its appeal and its limit.
Combined approaches
What Dermaplaning Pairs With
It is most often added to something else rather than booked alone.
Candidacy
Who May Be a Candidate
Dermaplaning suits most skin types. It is particularly popular with patients who want a visible improvement in texture with no recovery, and with anyone whose makeup is being disrupted by fine facial hair.
It is also a common first treatment for people who are cautious about starting with anything stronger.
How Leah decides
She looks at whether the skin is calm enough on the day, what other treatments you have had recently, and whether exfoliation is actually what your concern needs.
Likely a good fit
Dull or rough texture, noticeable vellus hair, makeup not sitting well, and a preference for a treatment with no downtime.
Where it is not appropriate
Active inflammatory acne, a rosacea flare, sunburn, cold sores or any broken skin. Recent resurfacing or a strong peel means waiting. It also will not address scarring, pigment or laxity, none of which are surface problems.
What happens
What to Expect
The hair grows back exactly as it was. It does not return thicker or darker, which is the single most common worry about this treatment and it is a myth.
Risks
Risks and Side Effects
Low risk when the skin is assessed first and the technique is sound.
Light redness
Brief and mild in some patients, usually settling within an hour.
Irritation or a nick
Uncommon, and a function of blade angle, tension and repeated passes over one area. This is the part that depends on the person holding the blade.
Sun sensitivity
Freshly exfoliated skin burns more easily. Sunscreen afterward is not optional.
What dermaplaning does and does not treat is discussed before the session.
When it is deferred
Active acne, a rosacea flare, sunburn, cold sores and any broken skin mean rescheduling. A blade over inflamed skin makes it worse rather than smoother.
Aftercare
Cost
Dermaplaning Cost in Irvine
A full standalone session is $125. Added to another facial in the same visit it is $75.
Most patients start with the add-on, because exfoliating first makes the facial that follows work better and it costs less than booking the two separately.
The most common question
Will the Hair Grow Back Thicker?
No. Vellus hair grows back exactly as it was, at the same texture and the same color. Cutting hair at the surface does not change the follicle that produced it.
It can feel blunter for a day or two because the tapered tip has been cut flat, which is where the myth comes from. The hair itself is unchanged.

No. Some patients have light pinkness for about an hour. Makeup can go back on the same day, which is why it suits people booking before an event.
Roughly every four weeks, which matches the skin's natural turnover cycle.
Not active inflammatory acne, and it is not done over active lesions because a blade spreads and irritates them. For active acne a clinical protocol with salicylic peels and extractions is the appropriate route.

No. It removes the outermost dead layer and fine hair. Scarring and pigment sit deeper and need different treatments, which is a physician conversation.
If you have active acne, a rosacea flare, sunburn, a cold sore or any broken skin, the session is deferred. Recent resurfacing or a strong peel also means waiting.
