A darker, uneven tone across the face is a common pigment concern in medium and deeper skin tones. This patient had 8 sessions of Q-switched Nd:YAG laser treatment for pigment correction. The photos show his face from the front, before and after the series.
Before: the skin tone looks darker and uneven, with deeper shading around the mouth and chin and across the forehead.
After: the tone across the face looks more even, and the darker areas around the mouth and chin look lighter. The after photo was taken in brighter light against a different background, so compare the darker areas with the rest of the face rather than the overall brightness.
About Q-switched laser for pigment: Q-switched lasers are used to treat pigment that sits in the top layer of the skin. In medium and deeper skin tones, low-energy Q-switched Nd:YAG treatment is given as a series of sessions, with strict sun protection before and after.
Recovery and risks: In deeper skin tones, laser treatment carries a risk of darker patches after treatment, lighter patches, blisters and scarring. This is why the energy is kept low and the treatment is spread across several sessions.
