You have a pocket of fat on your stomach, flanks or arms that will not shift with diet and exercise, and the ads for ultrasonic cavitation keep promising inches gone in an hour. So does it actually work? Here is a plain answer: what cavitation does to fat, what results are realistic, and who should choose something else instead.
The short answer
- Ultrasonic cavitation uses ultrasound energy to rupture fat cells in a treated area, which can modestly reduce localized fat.
- The clinical effects of non-invasive body contouring are mild to moderate, about 2 to 4 cm of circumference reduction across the full course of sessions.
- It is not a weight loss treatment, because cavitation with diet did not lower body weight or BMI more than diet alone.
- The right candidate is relatively fit with localized areas of fat, rather than someone living with obesity.
What ultrasonic cavitation is
Ultrasonic cavitation is a non-surgical body contouring treatment. A handpiece moves over the skin and delivers ultrasound energy into the fat layer underneath.
It is one of many non-invasive fat technologies, alongside low-level light, radiofrequency, laser and cryolipolysis, often called fat freezing. Some of these technologies have stronger data behind them than others.
Non-invasive treatments do not yet match the results of liposuction, but they reduce fat with little downtime and typically no need for anesthesia. The trade off is size of result: these devices do not yet approach the results seen with liposuction.
How cavitation works on fat cells
Ultrasound creates rapid cycles of compression and decompression in the tissue. Pressure-driven cavitation bubbles form at the boundary between the fat droplet and the watery inside of the fat cell, and this eventually ruptures the cell so it releases its stored fat, called triglycerides.
Under the microscope, the fat cells shrank in size and developed tiny ruptures large enough to let triglyceride droplets leak out. The nearby blood vessels, supporting tissue and skin showed no appreciable changes.
Because the surrounding blood vessels stay intact, the released fat droplets can then be cleared from the area, conceivably through lymphatic drainage. This is why cavitation is described as working on fat cells while sparing the tissue around them.
What results are realistic
Cavitation can produce a significant reduction of abdominal fat, but the change is modest in everyday terms. Across non-invasive body contouring devices, the clinical effects are mild to moderate, for example 2 to 4 cm of circumference reduction during the total treatment sessions.
When cavitation was paired with a diet, waist circumference and skinfold thickness improved more than with diet alone. Body weight and BMI, however, ended up no different, which is the clearest sign that this is contouring rather than weight loss.
Progress is usually tracked with circumference or caliper measurements and photos, and every method has limits, so judge results over the whole course rather than after one visit. Evidence on long-term outcomes or fat returning after 24 weeks is inadequate.
Is cavitation the right fit for your goal?
| Your goal | What we consider | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| A small, stubborn area when you are near your usual weight | Non-invasive contouring such as cavitation | How much fat there is and how patient you can be with gradual change |
| Losing weight overall | Diet, exercise and medical weight care, not body contouring | Your health history and your overall weight goal |
| Cellulite or skin texture | There is no definitive non-invasive treatment for cellulite | Which skin concern bothers you most |
| A large volume of fat and the biggest possible change | A surgical opinion, since non-invasive devices do not yet approach liposuction results | Whether surgery suits your health and downtime |
Who should not have cavitation
Cavitation is not a treatment for obesity, and diet and exercise remain important alongside it. It also does not suit everyone medically.
Cavitation protocols exclude people who are pregnant and people with liver disease, uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune disease, an abdominal hernia repaired with metal, an intrauterine device or a pacemaker, a joint prosthesis, or reduced sensation from a neurological condition. Tell us about every implant, device and health condition at your consultation so we can decide together whether cavitation is appropriate.
Cavitation can refine a stubborn area, but it is not weight loss, and I make sure everyone knows that before we start.
Who is a good candidate
Cavitation tends to suit people who match most of these points.
- You are relatively fit with one localized area of fat.
- Your weight has been fairly steady for a while.
- You want gradual contouring, not weight loss.
- You can commit to a series of sessions.
- You are not pregnant and have no implant in the area.
What a cavitation session looks like
- Consultation. We review your health history, any implants and the area you want to change, and talk honestly about what is realistic.
- Measurements and photos. We record the treatment area so changes can be tracked across your sessions.
- Treatment. The handpiece glides over the area while it delivers ultrasound energy into the fat layer.
- Series and follow up. Sessions are commonly scheduled once a week over several weeks, and we re-measure as you go.
Ultrasonic cavitation at Spectrum
We offer fat cavitation in Irvine for the abdomen, flanks, upper arms and neck. It is a contouring treatment for localized fat, and we plan it as a series rather than a single visit, with diet and exercise still doing the heavy lifting for your overall weight.
Our prices are $350 for the abdomen, $350 for the flanks, $350 for the upper arms and $175 for the neck. Every treatment books online with a $65 deposit that counts toward your treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cavitation sessions will I need?
Plans use a series of sessions, commonly once a week over several weeks, rather than one visit. We set the number at your consultation based on the area and your goals.
Is ultrasonic cavitation better than fat freezing?
When cavitation and fat freezing were each paired with a diet, there was no meaningful difference between them in waist circumference or skinfold thickness. The right choice depends on the area, your health and your goals.
Does ultrasonic cavitation help with weight loss?
No. Cavitation with diet did not change body weight or BMI more than diet alone. It is meant to reshape a localized area, not to lower the number on the scale.
What permanently removes fat cells?
Non-invasive devices, cavitation included, do not yet approach the results seen with liposuction. Cavitation ruptures fat cells in the treated area, but evidence on long-term outcomes after 24 weeks is inadequate.
Does cavitation get rid of cellulite?
There is no definitive non-invasive treatment for cellulite. Cavitation is aimed at the fat layer rather than skin texture.
Is ultrasonic cavitation safe?
Ultrasound fat reduction devices have reduced subcutaneous fat without significant adverse reactions. It is not suitable for everyone, so we review your health history and any implants first.
