You finally have the lips you wanted, and now you want to know how long they will stay that way. Lip filler is not permanent, and the honest answer depends on which product was used, where it was placed, and how your body handles it. Here is what the product labels say, what fading looks like, and how we plan top-ups at Spectrum.

The short answer

  1. Hyaluronic acid lip filler is temporary, and the body absorbs it gradually over time.
  2. Juvéderm Ultra XC lip results last up to one year with optimal treatment.
  3. Restylane Kysse is proven to last for up to 1 year, and Restylane-L effects generally last about six months.
  4. How long yours lasts depends on the filler, the area injected and your own tissue.

Why lip filler fades

Lip filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in the body that gives skin moisture, volume and elasticity. Filler gel is crosslinked into a network, which lets it last longer in the body than the naturally occurring kind.

Over time, the body absorbs the filler, so patients may need to repeat the treatment to keep the effect. The time the effect lasts depends on the filler material and the area where it is injected, and results also depend on your underlying tissue and the volume and type of filler used.

That is why two people can have the same appointment and see different timelines. It is also why we ask what you had before, and when.

02

Signs your lip filler is wearing off

Your lips may be ready for a top-up when you notice these changes.

  • Your lips look closer to how they did before filler.
  • The lip border looks less defined than it did.
  • Fine lines around your mouth are easier to see again.
  • It has been six months to a year since your treatment.

How we plan your lip filler top-up

  1. Review. Dr. Munib looks at how your lips have changed since your previous filler.
  2. History. Tell us which filler you had, when, and where, since past filler in the same area shapes the plan.
  3. Amount. We agree on how much product to add, and the price, before starting.
  4. Injection. The gel is placed with a fine needle, and the filler contains lidocaine to reduce pain during injection.
  5. Aftercare. Skip makeup for 12 hours and avoid strenuous exercise, heat and alcohol for 24 hours.

Lip filler at Spectrum and keeping your result

Lip filler at Spectrum is hyaluronic acid filler that adds volume for temporarily fuller lips. Performed by Sabeen Munib, MD. See how we plan each treatment on our lip filler page.

A half syringe of lip filler is $650, and a full syringe ranges from $750 per syringe to $850 per syringe depending on the product. Every treatment books online with a $65 deposit that counts toward your treatment.

I plan lip filler as a series of small decisions over time, not one large one.

If older filler has moved or looks uneven, read about filler migration and natural lip augmentation after dissolving filler.

When to seek urgent care

Seek immediate medical attention if you notice vision changes, signs of a stroke, a white, gray or blue look to the skin near the injection, or unusual pain during or shortly after treatment. These can mean filler has entered a blood vessel; the chance is low, but the complications can be serious and may be permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does lip filler ever go away completely?

Hyaluronic acid filler is temporary, and the body absorbs it gradually over time. Juvéderm Ultra XC lip results last up to one year with optimal treatment, and Restylane-L effects generally last about six months.

Can I make my lip filler last longer?

There is no proven trick to make filler stay, so we plan top-ups instead. How long it lasts depends on the filler material and the area injected.

Does lip filler look bad at first?

Swelling, tenderness, firmness, small lumps and bruising are common at first and usually go away within one to two weeks. We judge the final shape once that has settled, and some patients need a small touch-up then.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid filler can be broken down with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Dr. Munib assesses old or migrated filler before deciding whether to dissolve it.

What should I do before lip filler?

Tell us if you take aspirin, ibuprofen or other blood thinners, since these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. If you have previously had facial cold sores, mention it, because an injection can cause them to come back.
