Details of the Treatment

Thin lips can make the mouth look narrow, and a flat upper lip has little shape at the center. This patient had lip filler for thin lips to add volume and shape. The photos show her lips from the front, before treatment and after.

The same patient is shown in profile in our side-view lip filler case.

Before: both lips are thin, the upper lip border is flat with little shape at the center, and fine vertical lines run across the lips and above the upper lip.

How it was done: Sabeen Munib, MD placed the filler with a cannula.

After: both lips are fuller, the upper lip border has a clearer shape at the center, and the lip surface looks smoother. The after photo is brighter and softer in focus, which also makes skin and lip lines look softer, so judge the lip shape rather than the fine lines.

About filler for thin lips and lip lines: Dermal fillers are FDA-approved for lip augmentation in adults over the age of 21, and absorbable fillers are also approved for perioral lines, the small wrinkles around the mouth and lips.

Some fillers are absorbed by the body over time, so the treatment may need to be repeated to keep the result. How long it lasts depends on the filler and the area treated.

Recovery and risks: Swelling and bruising are the most common effects, and many settle within a few days to weeks. Less common risks include infection and allergic reaction. The most serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel.

Is lip filler right for you: It depends on your lip shape, the balance between your upper and lower lip, and how much change you want. Sabeen Munib, MD performs every lip filler treatment herself and assesses this at a consultation before any filler is placed.

Individual results vary. The outcome shown reflects this patient's specific anatomy, health history, and treatment plan. Results shown are not guaranteed and are not necessarily typical. Photos used with patient consent.
