Microneedling in Irvine & Orange County

Microneedling is collagen-induction therapy. A device with fine sterile needles creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, and the repair response lays down new collagen and elastin over the following weeks.

At Spectrum Skin Clinic we perform microneedling three ways: on its own, paired with the patient's own PRP or PRFM, or combined with radiofrequency energy. Which path fits depends on the concern, the depth involved, skin type, and downtime tolerance.

Every treatment is medically supervised by Dr. Sabeen Munib, MD.

How Microneedling Works

The needles open temporary micro-channels in the skin. The body reads these as small wounds and responds with a controlled wound-healing cascade.

That cascade recruits growth factors and stimulates fibroblasts, which produce fresh collagen and elastin. Over several weeks the new tissue can improve texture, soften scarring, and refine pore appearance.

Needle depth is adjusted to the concern and the area being treated, which is part of why the procedure is performed under medical supervision rather than as a fixed setting.

The Three Microneedling Pathways at Spectrum

The same underlying mechanism can be delivered three ways. The table below is how Dr. Munib frames the decision — it is not a ranking, and the right path depends on the individual assessment.

Choosing a Microneedling Pathway

PathwayWhat it addsWhen it may be consideredStarting price
Standard microneedlingCollagen induction through controlled micro-injury aloneTexture, mild acne scarring, early fine lines, and maintenance, when lower downtime and cost matter$399
With PRP or PRFMAdds the patient's own platelet or fibrin growth factors into the channelsAcne scarring and under-eye skin quality, when amplified healing is the goal$650
RF microneedling (Secret RF)Adds radiofrequency energy delivered at depthLaxity and texture together, when tightening and deeper remodeling are the goal$750

Who May Be a Candidate

Microneedling is most often considered for uneven texture, acne scarring, enlarged-looking pores, and early fine lines. It can be used across many skin tones because it relies on mechanical injury rather than heat or light, which lowers some pigment risks.

It is not appropriate for everyone. Active acne breakouts, certain skin infections, a history of keloid scarring, recent isotretinoin use, pregnancy, and some bleeding or immune conditions can make it unsuitable or require deferral.

Candidacy is decided at an in-person assessment, where pigment risk, scar type, and prior treatments are reviewed before any plan is set.

What to Expect During Treatment

A topical numbing cream is applied first, and numbing is available throughout. Most patients describe the sensation as mild to moderate.

The device is passed over the treatment area in sections, with depth set to the concern. When the PRP or PRFM pathway is chosen, the growth-factor preparation is applied or injected into the channels during the same visit.

A single face treatment is typically completed within the appointment window, after which a calming serum and sun protection are applied.

Downtime & Recovery Timeline

TimeframeWhat is typical
Day ofRedness similar to a mild sunburn; skin may feel warm and tight
Days 1-2Redness and light swelling settle for most patients; makeup is usually deferred
Days 3-5Surface may feel rough or flake lightly as it renews; sun protection is important
Week 2 onwardSurface recovery complete; collagen remodeling continues underneath

Sessions & Results Timeline

Microneedling is a series treatment. Spectrum's protocol is typically three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, which allows each round of collagen remodeling to build on the last.

Early surface improvement is often visible within two to four weeks. Because collagen continues to form, texture and scar changes can keep developing for several months after a series.

Maintenance sessions may be considered periodically once the initial course is complete, depending on the concern and how the skin responds.

How We Plan Your Treatment

The plan starts with what is being treated. Surface texture and early fine lines may be served by standard microneedling, while deeper or more stubborn acne scarring may point toward the PRP/PRFM or RF pathway.

Dr. Munib also weighs skin type and pigment risk, scar type, prior laser or peel history, downtime tolerance, and whether tightening is part of the goal. These factors decide both the pathway and the needle depth.

Because the pathways can be combined or sequenced over a series, the plan is reviewed as the skin responds rather than fixed in advance.

What Affects Your Cost

Cost depends mainly on the pathway. Standard microneedling starts at $399, the PRP or PRFM pathway at $650, and Secret RF microneedling at $750.

The number of sessions in a course, the size of the area treated, and whether growth factors or radiofrequency are added all affect the total. A series is usually planned rather than billed as a single visit.

Exact pricing for an individual plan is confirmed at consultation.

Before & After

Documented results from microneedling-based treatments at Spectrum are shown in the acne-scar and TCA-cross microneedling galleries and the PRFM subcision acne-scar series.

Outcomes vary by skin type, scar depth, and the number of sessions completed. Photographs are examples, not a promise of any specific result.

Why Patients Choose Spectrum

Microneedling at Spectrum is performed under the supervision of Dr. Sabeen Munib, MD, with depth and pathway decisions made on a medical assessment rather than a fixed menu setting.

Because the practice offers the standard, PRP/PRFM, and RF pathways under one roof, the recommendation can follow the concern instead of being limited to a single device.
