Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser in Irvine, CA — Sun Spots, Pigment & Tattoo Fading
Pigment-safe laser toning — melasma, PIH, and tattoos, with no downtime.
Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser in Irvine, CA
The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is a pigment-targeting laser used to fade sun spots, age spots, brown patches, and certain tattoo inks. It delivers nanosecond pulses of light that are absorbed by pigment and break it into fragments the body clears over the following weeks.
At Spectrum Skin Clinic in Irvine, treatment is physician-performed by Dr. Sabeen Munib, MD. Because pigment problems behave differently on different skin types, the wavelength, energy, and number of sessions are matched to the pigment depth and the skin tone rather than applied as a single fixed setting.

What the Q-Switched Nd:YAG Treats
| The concern | How the laser addresses it | What the approach depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Sun spots, age spots, and freckles (lentigines) | 532 nm light targets superficial brown pigment so it darkens, then flakes away | How superficial the pigment is and the surrounding skin tone |
| Deeper or dermal pigment | 1064 nm light reaches deeper pigment with less surface heating | Pigment depth and the patient's Fitzpatrick skin type |
| Certain tattoo inks (black, dark blue) | Nanosecond pulses fragment ink for clearance over a series | Ink color, depth, and age — covered in detail on the tattoo-removal page |
| Post-inflammatory pigment and uneven tone | Conservative, lower-energy settings to avoid provoking more pigment | Inflammation risk and prior laser history |
How the Q-Switched Nd:YAG Works
The laser uses selective photothermolysis: a nanosecond pulse is absorbed by melanin or tattoo ink faster than the surrounding skin can heat, so the pigment shatters while nearby tissue is largely spared. Two wavelengths are available, 532 nm for superficial brown spots and 1064 nm for deeper pigment and darker skin types.
A Q-switched laser fires in nanoseconds. A picosecond-class platform such as Candela PicoWay fires roughly a thousand times faster, which can fragment pigment more finely in selected cases. Whether a nanosecond or picosecond approach fits depends on the pigment, the skin type, and prior treatment, not on the device name alone.
Q-Switched Nd:YAG vs. Picosecond (PicoWay)
| Consideration | Q-switched Nd:YAG (nanosecond) | Picosecond-class (Candela PicoWay) |
|---|---|---|
| Pulse speed | Nanosecond pulses | Picosecond pulses — roughly 1,000× faster |
| Best suited to | Sun spots, age spots, many tattoo inks | Stubborn or multicolor pigment, certain tattoos, some toning protocols |
| Skin-type considerations | 1064 nm option for deeper or darker skin | Often chosen when finer fragmentation is the goal |
| How Dr. Munib decides | Pigment depth, skin type, inflammation risk, and prior laser history — assessed at consultation | The same factors; the platform follows the pigment, not the other way around |
Who the Q-Switched Nd:YAG May Suit
May be a good candidate
Discrete sun spots, age spots, or freckles; uneven brown tone from sun exposure; or a fading tattoo in suitable ink colors, in a patient who can commit to sun protection between sessions.
Approached with caution
Melasma is heat-sensitive and can worsen with aggressive treatment; in selected patients a low-energy toning protocol may be considered, but it is approached carefully and is not first-line. Recently tanned skin is treated only after the tan fades.
May not be ideal
Active infection or open skin at the site, certain photosensitizing medications, pregnancy, or pigment that is better suited to a different modality, reviewed at consultation.
Tattoo Fading with the Q-Switched Nd:YAG
The Q-switched Nd:YAG also fragments certain tattoo inks, black and dark blue respond most predictably, over a series of sessions. Ink color, depth, and age affect how completely a tattoo clears. Tattoo-specific candidacy, expectations, and pricing are covered on the laser tattoo removal page.
The Treatment Process
Consultation
Dr. Munib examines the pigment, confirms the skin type, and rules out conditions that mimic sun damage before recommending a wavelength and energy.
Treatment
Pulses are delivered to the target areas; most sessions take 10 to 30 minutes depending on the area. A snapping sensation is typical and brief.
Aftercare
Treated spots may darken and form a fine crust before flaking off. Sun protection is essential; picking or scrubbing the area is avoided.
Results Timeline
First days: Treated pigment darkens, then a thin crust forms and sheds over 1 to 2 weeks.
2–4 weeks: Brown spots look lighter as the fragmented pigment clears.
Over a series: Deeper pigment and tattoos fade gradually across several sessions spaced weeks apart.
Healing & Sun Protection
Downtime
Most patients return to routine immediately. Treated spots may look darker for several days before flaking. This is expected.
Pigment response
Spots typically darken before they lighten. Aggressive scrubbing or sun exposure during healing can cause new pigment.
Maintenance
Daily SPF protects results. New sun exposure can create new spots, so periodic touch-ups may be wanted over time.

Who Performs the Treatment at Spectrum
Pigment laser treatment at Spectrum Skin Clinic is performed by Dr. Sabeen Munib, MD. She selects the wavelength and energy based on pigment depth and Fitzpatrick skin type, with particular care on deeper skin tones where the wrong settings can provoke more pigment.
Because pigment can be a sign of something other than sun damage, she examines the area before treating and adjusts the plan to the diagnosis rather than to a fixed protocol.

After several aesthetic nurses told me I was allergic to filler dissolver, Dr. Munib took a careful, evidence-based approach. She used ultrasound to locate my migrated lip filler, tested a small area first, and explained I was reactive—not allergic. She dissolved a small test area before safely treating my upper lip. Throughout the process she was gentle, thorough, and educational. It’s a long drive for me, but her knowledge and expertise make it absolutely worth it.
